Star #2 - SACHELLE

Sachelle is going to be playing Nicki Minaj who features in the song with Drake. We have chosen to use Sachelle as our star because not only does she follow the conventions of a female hip-hop star in terms of her look, she is extremely good at performing and particularly lip-syncing. She can lip-sync to both fast-paced and slow-paced songs, and because she has a very out-going character we are confident that she will definitely perform well in front of a camera.

Star #1 - CLINTON

For our song music video we have chosen our peer Clinton as the main star, he will be playing the rapper Drake and will have the main lead in the video. For most of the video he will be rapping mostly fast-paced lyrics, we have chose Clinton to be our main star as not only does he enjoy the genre of song we have chosen to do, he is also an excellent performer in both dancing and rapping. Clinton has a very out-going and bubbly personality, and has had past experience in being in front of a camera, therefore he is quite confident in performing and carrying out any tasks we require him to do.
Here is a short video of Clinton intoducing himself so you can get to know a little about him.

Nicki Minaj - SUPERBASS: Analysis

Nicki Minajs hit 'Superbass' was released in April 2011 by Cash Records and reached the top forty music chart. The song is an upbeat, catchy summer tune which got everyone singing, the song contains singing and of course Nicki Minajs rapping skills in which she aims this song at main different audiences. The song is aimed at people who like R&B, Pop and Rap creating a wide spread audience who will buy, listen and download the song making money for the artist herself, her label and the music industry.
The songs target audience is young female adults and teenage girls. Nicki Minaj says she writes, sings and raps these songs for young girls and independent women out there as no one else in the music busness is relating to issues of this age category and gender at the moment. Nicki Minaj shows and wants women/girls out there to love and respect themselves, she also states that women can be apart of the music business and even the rap world as women are discriminated within Rap. Nicki Minaj has shown women they can accomplish this career in life without being discriminated about i.e. women within the rap side of the music industry are normal quoted as hoe.
This song is clearly aimed at young femlae adults and teens as the colouring of the music video is pink, pink, pink. This colour is used and many other bright colours because they are represented as irly, pretty colours and Nicki Minajs favourite colour is pink and she thinks herself as a barbie type figure and calls her fans 'Barbs'. This appeals to younger girls as they picture Nicki Minaj as a girly barbie like figure to look up to, striving to be like her.

Nicki Minaj.

As Nicki Minaj has a significant feature in Drakes songs 'Make me proud, and I an going to have a female rapper in the music video, I have decided to do a small amount of background research on her as well.

DRAKE - New Artist Research

BACKGROUND

Famed hip-hop artist Drake was born to a mixed-race couple in Canada in 1986, and raised Jewish. He came to fame playing wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks in seven seasons of the popular teen soap 'Degrassi'. In 2006, Drake began circulating mixtapes of his raps, and signed a record deal in 2009. His hit songs include "Every girl", "Best I ever had", and "Take care". Drake, the world's only black Jewish-Canadian rap star, was born Aubrey Drake Graham on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Canada. Drake grew up with music in his blood. His father, Dennis Graham, was a drummer for legendary rock star Jerry Lee Lewis, and Drake says that his mother, Sandi Graham, also hails from a "very musical" family. Drake comes from an eclectic and unique racial and religious background. His father is an African-American Catholic and his mother is a white Canadian Jew. Speaking about his personal identity, Drake says, "At the end of the day, I consider myself a black man because I'm more immersed in black culture than any other. Being Jewish is kind of a cool twist. It makes me unique."

Drake's parents divorced when he was 5 years old, and he was raised by his mother in Forest Hill, an affluent and predominantly Jewish Toronto neighborhood. He had a Bar Mitzvah at age 13 and observed the Jewish High Holy Days with his mother. "My mom has always made Hanukkah fun," Drake recalls. "When I was younger, she gave cool gifts and she'd make latkes." Despite his Jewish upbringing, Drake says he felt isolated at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, his virtually all-white high school. Drake remembers, "Nobody understood what it was like to be black and Jewish." However, he also adds, "being different from everyone else just made me a lot stronger."

RISE TO HIP-HOP

While starring on 'Degrassi', Drake began attempting his transition into the world of hip-hop. He released his first mistape - Room for improvement - in 2006, achieving modest sales around approximately 6,000 copies. He followed that with the 2007 release of another mixtaoe - Comeback season. It included Drake's first hit single and music video, "Replacement Girl", which was features as the New Joint of the Day on BET's popular Hip-hop television show 106 & Park. Early 2008, Drake reeived an unexpected call from rap star Lil Wayne, who asked Drake to board a flight to Houston that night to join his tour.

Since that call, Drake has enjoyed a rapid ascent to the top of the music world. After touring and recording with Lil Wayne, Drake released his third mixtape, So Far Gone, in February 2009. It featured the infectiously catchy single "Best I ever had", which eaked at No. 2 on Billboards Hot 100 singles chart. Ssince then,  Drakes barrage of catchy, R&B-infused hip-hop songs have dominated radio airwaves. His most popular singles at this time included "Every Girl", "Forever" and "Money to blow".
By mid-2009, Drake had inked a record deal with Lil Wanye's Young Money Entertainment.

CHART-TOPPING SUCCESS

On June 15 2010, Drake releaed his first full studio album, Thank me later, which debuted at No.1 on both Aamerican and Canadian  album charts and has since been ceritifed platinum. Drake's new persona as the cocksure prince of Hip-hop seems to clash with his middle-class Jewish upbringing and former career as a teenage soap-opera star.
Nevertheless, Drake attempts to fuse these seemingly incngruous stages of his life into one perosona. On the December 2009 cover of Vibe magazine, Drake sports a diamond-crusted Chai, a hip-hop shout out to his Jewish roots. And in his song "The Presentaion", he raps "Who's Drake? Where's Wheelchair Jimmy at?"
In November 2001, Drake released his second studio album, Take Care, which included songs like "Headlines", "Make me proud", "The Motto" and "Take Care". The album met with wide acclaim, winning the 2013 Grammy Award for the best rap album, among several other honors.

CHANGE OF SONG!

Initially me and my team-mate Esther were meant to make a music video to Justin Timberlake's 'What you got', however we struggled to come up with a good narrative/concept for the song, we have therefore decided to change the song we want to do to Drake's 'Make me proud' ft. Nicki Minaj.
We have chosen this song as we feel the beats are a lot more catchy and the song itself has a bit more of a narrative to it, and as a result we'll be able to create a video of higher standard. Even though we understand we are pushed for time we are prepared to work extra hard to ensure our final video is of top quality. We have already come up with a number  of ideas for narrative, fila-footage, camera angles and editting and are ready to begin filming next week.

More Inspiration - Nathan Sykes - Kiss Me Quick

Watching the music video of this song definitely gave me some ideas for the music video me and my team-mate are going to create later on. I find the concept of the video quite cool as it is set in a studio with a white backdrop, it has such a 'classy' feel to it, and even though the visuals don't match the lyrics of the song Simon Frith's theory of performance has been applied as the artist is 'performing' to the camera and there is also slight choreography within the video. When it comes to filming my music video i aim to do part of it in a studio with a white-backdrop and most probably have the artist wearing black and white.

R&B Genre Conventions - Shopping List

Justin Timberlake's 'What you got' is an R&B song, therefore when we create our music video we have to ensure that we follow most the conventions of the R&B genre, this is so the video appeals to the stereotypical audience of R&B. Below is a list that I have created containing some the typical conventions that you would have in the R&B genre. Me and my team-mate Esther will aim to use as many of these conventions as possible when filming our video.

  • Objectification of women, seen as a sexual object
  • Dominant male, usually singing about women
  • Location is typically; club, bedroom, pent-house/mansion, city/street
  • Costume; MALE - Men are usually seen as topless, jeans, jewellery and tattoos are also used in fashion. FEMALE - women usually wear minimal clothing, heels and jewellery also used in fashion.
  • Close-up shots, wide-angle shots, long-shots, camera movement
  • Usually an element of performance such as lip-synching and choreography. R&B videos also tend to have a narrative - therefore the main artist would usually have an artist featuring.

Target Audience

The target audience for our chosen song by Justin Timberlake will be 15-24 year olds who enjoy the RnB Genre. Our music video will primarily attract a majority of females that males as there will be a male lead in the music video. The youth will be attracted to the concept and narrative of the video as it has quite a playful and fun vibe to it that many can relate to.
